My Remake
I watched 12 Angry Men the other day for the first time. Even though it had its moments that were a little cheesy I think it was a fantastic film worthy of its acclaim. Watching it though, I kept thinking to myself who would play who if it were remade today. I thought I would share my thoughts here and see if anyone disagrees.
SPOILER ALERT: The order of these characters is in order of their changing their vote, so if you haven't seen the film, you have been warned.
Juror 8- Originally played by Henry Fonda, he is the first character to vote not guilty. I'm not sure if it was the looks or the mannerisms but I thought Willem Dafoe would be great.
Juror 9- Originally played by Joseph Sweeney, this is the second to convert to voting the accused as innocent. I think Martin Landau would be perfect for this after seeing him as Bela Lugosi.
Juror 5- Originally played by Jack Klugman, this character is from a violent slum but does not have the disposition expected of him by other ignorant jurors. By far John Turturro would be the best for this because he gives the most compelling performances in anything he does.
Juror 11- Originally played by George Voskovec this character is an immigrant watchmaker proud of his assimilation into American culture. Perhaps Jean Reno if for no other reason than his classic looks and accent.
Juror 2- Originally played by John Fiedler this character is small and has a very high voice. His squinty eyes and flustered demeanour could be played by Leslie Jordan because he is a small man with an unusual voice.
Juror 6- Originally played by Edward Binns I would follow the lead of the 1997 film remake and cast James Gandolfini because he is a tough looking guy who can get a bit heated but underneath it all he's pretty reasonable.
Juror 7- Originally played by Jack Warden, I think Christopher Meloni from Law & Order: SVU because he is good at acting unreasonable and overtly tough.
Juror 12- Originally played by Robert Webber, I have no doubt whatsoever that Stephen Colbert should play this role. No explanation needed.
The Foreman- Originally played by Martin Balsam this character had trouble bringing order to the table, much like William H. Macy might.
Juror 10- Originally played by Ed Begley, this character was a pretty terrible guy who offended everyone so much they were forced to leave the table. Brian Dennehy would have the same kind of brashness I think.
Juror 4- Originally played by E.G. Marshall, this rational businessman proclaims he never sweats. He has the calm demeanour that Ben Kingsley shows in his most wicked roles.
Juror 3- Originally played by Lee J. Cobb, this is probably the hardest one to pick because the original actor was pretty much a definitive one. Who could try and place this difficult character? Vincent D'Onofrio.
What did you guys think? It took me a while to really think of should be who, but they're pretty apt if you ask me.
