Think Past - May 2010

The year of magical thinking

May 31st 2010 11:41
: This could be the last
I woke up yesterday morning at around 10 am, turned on my computer and after checking my e-mails decided to browse the news website. I will never forget seeing the image of Dennis Hopper as that crazy photographer in 'Apocalypse now', with the headline reading 'Dennis Hopper dead at age 74'.

Yet another great icon of pop culture has been taken by cancer and it just isn't fair. Dennis Hopper was a brilliant and at times frighteningly genuine actor, a visionary director and inspirational artist. I was lucky enough to see an exhibition of his art works last year and i was blown away by the ingenuity and intensity of some pieces. I will never forget the first time i watched 'Blue Velvet'; i was captivated by Hopper's portrayal of Frank Booth and still get shivers when i think of the 'in dreams' sequence.

Freedom of speech

Today was, on some websites, draw Mohammed day. This came about to supposedly celebrate free speech and protest the censoring of artworks, namely those that chose to portray the prophet.

I am a big believer in free speech and i think everyone has the right to express their opinions; some may be less valid or interesting than others but none the less they should have the chance to be heard. Voltaire summed it up when he said "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it

Death of a legend

: Ronnie James Dio
I have been really inconsistent with posting blogs, i blame it on being sick a lot and the fact that not much has inspired me to write lately. Today however, i heard of the passing of Ronny James Dio, the lead singer of Black Sabbath who had an absolutley amazing voice.

I always thought Ozzy was Sabbath's lead singer, but i heard about the two singers and decided to see what Dio was like. The first song i ever heard was 'heaven and hell', and it completely blew me away. Every time i hear the intro i get shivers, it is just one of those songs that has really stuck with me. The whole 'heaven and hell' album was amazing, his voice was so distinctive and powerful; his voice was one you could instantly recognise

: The alien films
I watched Alien for the first time two weeks ago, and to my surprise i really liked it. I have never been one for sci-fi alien films, but this one was intelligent and interesting and genuinely thrilling. After this i was more than keen to see Aliens, the sequel; sequels generally have bad raps but i was sure this would be different.

The film was just over two hours long, but it felt like the whole afternoon was spent trying to stay awake for that travesty. Bad hair cuts, bad language and bad stereotypes abound in this shocker, i cannot understand how a movie franchise could start off so well and then just fall into an abyss from which they could never recover
