Appreciating my generation

November 9th 2011 05:08
: Modern Times, Modern Love
Anyone who knows me or this blog will know that i like my films, music and books a little bit older, and have on more than one occasion been told I have the tastes of a 40 year old man. When asked a while ago if I could go through time to see any concert, I had to say Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock (although this was a tough choice).

Lately however, I have been feeling so lucky to be 24 at this particular point in time. Why? Because I have been able to enjoy the really good stuff that only people from this generation seem to get into.

This isn’t to say it’s exclusively for people my age, it’s just I am yet to meet a large number of people outside of my age group who can agree with these things. If you’re older and like this stuff, I congratulate you.

Here are a few of the reasons why I have felt like this lately:

The Blood Brothers & Jaguar Love and Death From Above 1979:

All of these bands have an amazing, unique sound and I feel they are terribly underrated. Johnny Whitney has one of, if not the most distinguishable voice of this century and I find it to be comparable to that of an insane, tortured angel.

The Mighty Boosh and Metalocalypse:

Two shows that I feel display a true style of genius, I am yet to meet anyone over the age of 30 who even knows these shows. Metalocalypse, being a cartoon, is also considered a bit young for some of the older folks but even at 24 I feel allowed, nay entitled, to watching cartoons when and wherever I please. In saying these things I am trying to not come across like some brat that thinks my age allows me to have some sort of superior taste. Far from it, I am saying these things from a personal point of view that if I were older I may not have given some of them a chance.

Bunny and the Bull:

By the same people who make The Mighty Boosh, this is one of the most amazing films I have been privileged with watching in some time. It was funny and warm and beautifully created and also made me bite my lip so as to not cry. I still get shivery thinking about the gorgeous ending.

For every rule there are exceptions, and these happen to be the things/creations that embarrass me about my generation. I hate, yes I mean hate a lot of people from my generation because of their inability to accept the world does not revolve around them and wearing the same shirt as someone else is not a definition of irony.
A small list:

Films like 500 days of Summer etc:

I cannot stand the trend of ‘Indy’ films where a hopelessly romantic, straight laced guy falls for the whimsical, free spirited girl who for some goddamn reason always listens to The Smiths or Radiohead. Most girls I know like that seem free spirited but in actuality have some sort of a mental deficiency rendering them unable to act like a normal person.

Hipsters:

The bane of my existence. Wearing their vintage tees, skinny jeans, black rimmed glasses, sipping on starbucks while listening to that amazing band that you’ve never heard of on their iPod. I don’t get them, why would you want to brag about listening to bands no one has ever heard of? It’s just like telling stories about people no one has met: there is no relative interest so no one cares! Also, it’s these guys that films like the aforementioned are aimed at.

The ongoing reality TV and celebrity culture influx:

I don’t need to explain this one, and there are so many names I could put here I don’t want mentioned on my blog.

It’s just like telling stories about people no one has met: there is no relative interest so no one cares!"

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for leaving a comment, I always love knowing someone is reading...even if they aren't reading that closely. I said that this was a piece from my point of view, seperate from those in my generation because I rarely find people my age who share my views.

In regards to 'bragging' about hearing bands no one has ever heard of, once again you missed the point. People know those bands, they are actually quite popular however I don't think they got the acclaim they deserve that's all.

The last paragraph was kind of ironic, you are reading a blog by a complete stranger so if I wrote anything on here, interesting or not, it would involve someone you've never met: me. So if you don't want to read a stranger's stories this is not the place for you sadly.

Also, was that last sentence necessary? If you had indeed made a good point in your arguments this would have negated them. There is no grammar and you spelt sister wrong I'm guessing on purpose but to what end?

But once again, thanks for the comment it was appreciated
