why is there not more written about this film??
I was searching for a really great horror movie, one that had the shocks but also the story line. I was reading through pages of reviews and lists of the best of something or other and stumbled upon a little piece about this film. It sounded slightly interesting so thought I would give it a try.
The description said that Martin is a young man who thinks he is a vampire and goes to live with his strictly religious cousin to make up for his ways. Sounds like a simple enough plot but watching it is a completely strange and exciting experience. You sometimes like him, other times hate him but can't help but be fascinated with what he does.
This film has the elements of a horror film like blood and gore compliments of a young Tom Savini (who has a starring-ish role in the film), but it is also a little tender at points which is something I found surprising. This is one of the early films by Mr. George Romero and a lot of the actors in it are friends/family, as this film was made on quite a low budget. All of the locations are real, no sets were used.
Anyway back to the actual film, it was interesting and a little strange. I was kept focused the whole way through, so much so the ending hit me in the face like a frisbee. I had hands over my mouth, completely aghast for over a minute. I thought at some point about what the ending might be but even when I saw it happening I couldn't comprehend it. I think anyone making a list about any films needs to check this one out, it's a classic and I'm surprised it never gained mainstream interest.

Here's my review if you're interested

I recently saw and reviewed another similarly themed movie at Sydney's A Night of Horror film festival called Midnight Son, also about a man convinced he is some kind of vampire.
I'm not sure when or if it will get an Australian DVD release, but keep your eyes peeled. If you liked Martin, you'll very much enjoy Midnight Son.
