MILK

Sean Penn is one of only a handful of actors who continues to surprise me in a good way. He is at a point in his career where other actors careers have begun to wane (think tom hanks's career from 2002-present, with the exception of charlie wilsons war). Milk is an absolutely amazing film about the beginning of gay activism in America, led by the courageous Harvey Milk.
Before watching this film, i wasn't actually sure what it was about; i had heard all of the buzz surrounding it so i decided it must be worth watching. After the film finished and after i had stopped crying i felt truly lucky to live in these modern times. Yes, there are wars, economic crisis etc. but these are things which have always been around; atleast we don't have the added problems of bigotry which was so rampant during the 60's and 70's. This film is sure to be a classic which teaches us to remember the struggles and conflicts in the past.
Sean Penn really does deserve the acclaim surrounding him, i urge anyone who disagrees to watch this film and still tell me otherwise. To people like him, Gus Van Sant and the other people attributed with the making of this film, one quote from Milk is fitting:
"you can't live on hope alone, but without hope life is not worth living"
This film really did mean that much to me, purely because it gives me hope for the future of the film industry, that it may not be doomed to relentlessly churn out raunchy teen comedies or mindless action films. It is a relief to watch a film full of feeling and which someone put real thought into, considering what it is this film was going to say not how much it was going to make.
I think i'm going to write more blogs on the important films made in recent times. There are a few and i think they are all important in different ways but for the same reason.
