The world is about to begin
August 12th 2007 09:05
After a brief period of preparation, the world is very soon going to begin.
The interesting thing from our perspective is that it seems like we are right in the midst of history, in fact some have even gone as far as to suggest that it might end soon. This is the curious state of transition in which we find ourselves. I shall agree that perhaps we might not make it through. But if we do make it through we will soon look back at all that which came before as pre-history, a curiosity at the most.
Some have postulated that in the late pleistocene the Homo Sapiens population was no higher than 10 000 and possibly as low as 1 000 breeding pairs. Others have postulated on top of this that our intelligence is mainly a feature of our survival of this climactic disaster, for only those with a certain type of intelligence were able to survive. Looking back now, we see that intelligence coming to centre stage as the beginning of the human story, before that we were just clever monkeys (like we are now something more than clever monkeys).
So yes there may be a bottleneck ahead, and yes it might be one that we are unable to squeeze through, but those who make it through to the other side will realise that in the history of the universe "Humanity" is just a footnote in the preface, and they are now actors in the first chapter. Very exciting.
