I have been following this election more closely than I usually would.
I am truly terrified of what would happen if Tony Abbott became the leader of this country. I am a woman with no discerning religous beliefs, and he is a guy who in his own words is 'threatened by homosexuals' and thinks abortions are 'convenient' and an 'easy way out'.
And yeah, Tony 'mad monk' Abbot, the liberals leader
Although there haven't been enough bad things written about this guy, this isn't the problem I have had with this election. I am embarrassed by the Australian media's questioning of Julia Gillard in relation to her past lovers and why she has no children. Oh, and there have been countless articles written about her clothes and choices of suits.
What happened to the day when political candidates were questioned about their policies, and not their personal lives? No male candidate has faced this kind of scrutiny before and I think it's shameful, especially because it is mostly perpetrated by female writers. Is it any wonder women aren't taken seriously in political matters, when others holding a position of power use it to make catty remarks.
The main offender I want to point out is Janet Albrechtsen who accused Ms. Gillard of 'showcasing a bare home and an empty kitchen as badges of honour and commitment to her career' and not knowing about how to meet 'the needs of a husband or partner'.
I would like to give a huge kudos to meida watch and Crikey.com for being the only voices of reason in the media, calling out these people and shaming them for their rediculous actions. Pretty much every other channel is equivalent to fox news.
